Miroir Noir

Having just seen Miroir Noir, Arcade Fire's tour documentary, I am glad to report that it is a damn fine piece of film-making. It may be designed to appeal to dedicated fans more than the casual listener, but there's enough of a balance between the moody camerawork (rather overplayed in the National's A Skin, A Night) and the drama of the band's music to make it a beautiful film by any standing.
My favourite moment by far is the footage of the band's manic percussion during their performance of 'Laika' - though in the film, this footage (selected for the trailer) is accompanied instead by their contribution to the Six Feet Under soundtrack, the uncharacteristically melancholy 'Cold Wind.' The contrast really is striking, and the effect is almost like some sort of tribute to something that once was - as if this film was made long after the band fell out, or something else similarly tragic happened.
To give an idea of this effect, open this link in a new tab, press play on this video of a playful kitten, and gain an unexpected insight into his life of suffering:
Devastating.

god, i feel like this cat was my best friend but it died 2 years ago and this is the only video i had from it.
Ha! It's a powerful song that can make that kitten's life look anything other than out-of-control adorable.
mal den teufel nicht an die wand!
Just makes me think twice about playing this song the next time I'm doing anything fun, is all.
Ha! That song's such a downer. Thanks Shane, now I'm going to laugh out loud every time I listen to it. We are so damn programmed for tragedy these days. In fact, I'm going to play the playful kitten clip in my head any time I feel down, for a reality check. Do I really feel down or is it just the soundtrack? Here's hoping your top 2008 finds a few uppers in it.
May you stay ever inspired in 2009, Shane.
Thank you Laurel :)
