The Tide Is High
In your eye is a city
out of control
it plays the blues forever
the car alarms have been drowned
and the cats are dead
no provisional government here,
more needles than streets
both wet with death
the tide rises.
Failure floats into shot.
wet white shirts and slick hair.
She has cut her name into America
like a wound, wet with seawater.
It rings out, as the south loses shape
the voice of a belle on the air:
Ka-trina, Ka-trina. Katrina.
