Twin Sister's Double EP

It's on sale now - meaning you can go and grab one of my favourite releases of the year without delay.
I've written a lot about them already - but in case you missed it, I'll do so again. Their original EP, Vampires with Dreaming Kids, was one of the most astonishing four-song releases I'd ever come across, combining songwriting finesse with a gorgeous aesthetic. Their new release is just as enticing, adding a certain understated charm and adventurous, and showing they're not willing to sit still. As a double EP, it's well worth your money.

Grizzly Bear - Lullabye

I don't know if I am living in this song's head, or if it is living in mine. I just can't seem to imagine where something like this could come from. It completely overshadows everything else on this fine album, that much I know. But it is some puzzle to me, like some visually amazing film in a foreign language that I cannot place. It pulls itself from tired singing and guitar picking to awesome heights, with singing in chorus, and pacy drums, and electric guitar that slings itself around the room.
It was once said to me that little children, when they begin to sing random invented melodies out of pure happiness, write music that the best musician could never write, music closer to humanity than anything ever composed. I think this song is reason enough to rethink that statement.

don't tell me you can't remember

Owen Pallett - A Man With No Ankles

When I first put this song on, it was raining like it might never stop. But by the time the last note had rolled away, the sun was streaming down instead. This says a lot about the song I think: it's so good that God himself pays attention, and takes it as scene direction. There's a lot of possibilities there.

A Swedish Love Story will be available on September 27th. As with most of Pallett's output, I'm assuming it'll be wonderful.

Solar Bears

Solar Bears - Primary Colours at the Back of my Mind

Solar Bears are an Irish band, from Dublin and Wicklow. This is one of their songs, and it's stunningly fine. The harsh guitars, jarring at first, melt sweetly into the flow of strings and rhythm, and nothing seems out of place. The overall effect is akin to something completely natural, a chaotic small-scale mix of flooding colour, the palette you hold in your hand suddenly and unexpectedly chiming with your exact mood, your blue evening, your dim mind.

Their debut album, She Was Coloured In, will be out on September 20th. You can buy it here.
